Newcastle remained strong for the foreign direct investment (FDI) promotion strategy category in the eighth iteration of fDi Intelligence’s flagship European Cities and Regions of the Future 2022/23 ranking.
The European Cities and Regions of the Future 2022/23 ranking collected surveys from local investment promotion agencies for the FDI Strategy category. It is the only qualitative category in the otherwise data-driven study, and also feeds into the results.
Having reviewed 75 survey submissions from investment promotion agencies from cities across Europe, the panel of four external judges — belonging to the investment promotion and FDI — plus fDi Intelligence’s editor Jacopo Dettoni, awarded Newcastle fourth place again for its investment promotion strategy in the mid-sized cities category.
The overall study identified the most promising investment destinations across Europe, showing that European locations have shown resilience to the inevitable investment fallout of the pandemic.
As many as 356 cities were assessed and grouped by population size into five: major, large, mid-sized, small and micro cities. The data collected in five sub-categories was then ranked on the basis of economic potential, business friendship, connectivity, human capital and lifestyle, and cost effectiveness.
